This January, I had the honor of attending the Advanced Dental Implant and Reconstructive Surgery Training Program through the GDIA (Global Dental Implant Academy).
Through the program, I spent 4.5 days in Tijuana, Mexico, and participated in close to 45 hours of live surgery training.
All surgeries were done at no cost to patients receiving care.
During the week, I was personally involved with the placement of 30 implants, 7 guided bone regeneration procedures, 15 blood draws, 5 osseous reduction surgeries with piezo handpiece, 10 sinus lifts, extraction of a full boney horizontally impacted canine (palatal approach), HLISA and LISA sinus lift osteotomies, and several other intricate procedures.
This program was a very fulfilling adventure both professionally and personally. I was able to experience true Mexican culture and provide service that otherwise would never have been completed.
I gained knowledge and experience that makes me a better clinician, surgically and restoratively. I formed lifelong friendships with colleagues and mentors that cannot happen if we just stay in the day-to-day in our separate offices.
My purpose at the beginning of this trip was to improve my skills, continue my implant dentistry education, and have an adventure… all were achieved. Thank you to GDIA for the experience.
